The US President Pressures the Thai government to Reaffirm Commitment to Cambodian Ceasefire with Trade Penalties

The United States has applied pressure on Thailand to reaffirm its dedication to a ceasefire agreement with Cambodia, indicating that trade negotiations could be halted as efforts are made to stop a Trump-mediated ceasefire arrangement from collapsing.

Border Tensions Escalate

Earlier this week, Thai officials announced it was putting on hold the truce agreement, alleging Cambodia of laying fresh landmines along the mutual frontier, among them an incident that reportedly injured a Thai military personnel on duty, who suffered a foot amputation in the blast.

Following this, a fatality occurred and several others wounded by gunfire along the Thai-Cambodia frontier, raising concerns of a fresh wave of tit-for-tat fighting.

American Economic Leverage

Over the weekend, a representative from Thailand's foreign office told journalists that a official communication from the Office of the US Trade Representative announcing the suspension of trade deal talks was received on Friday night.

He quoted the letter as saying that discussions on trade – which are focusing on a 19 percent American duty – could resume once the Thai government reaffirmed its commitment to carrying out the mutual truce agreement.

“Trade talks are ongoing and distinct from frontier matters,” said a different official representative.

President’s Economic Warning

Speaking to the press aboard the presidential plane as he traveled to the Sunshine State on the end of the week, Trump implied that he had used the “threat of tariffs” in calls with the ASEAN nation heads.

He stated, “Today, I prevented a conflict using tariffs, the menace of duties,” adding, “they’re doing great. I think they’re gonna be fine.”

Ceasefire Agreement Background

The President witnessed the finalization of a ceasefire agreement, held in Malaysia this last autumn, and has promoted it as one of several deals around the world he claims should earn him the Nobel Peace prize.

The worst fighting in a ten years between Thai and Cambodian troops broke out in mid-summer, with gunfire, artillery and airstrikes leaving dozens of people killed and 300,000 displaced.

Historic Frontier Conflict

Thailand and Cambodia have a historic territorial disagreement that originates from conflicts regarding maps from the colonial period created by French cartographers. Ancient temples along the frontier are claimed by both sides.
