The State of Texas Top Legal Officer Files Lawsuit Against Acetaminophen Producers Over Autism Claims

Legal Action
The Texas Attorney General, a Trump ally who is running for the United States Senate, accused the drug companies of concealing safety concerns of Tylenol

The top legal official in Texas Ken Paxton is taking legal action against the makers of Tylenol, claiming the companies withheld safety concerns that the pain reliever presented to pediatric brain development.

The court filing comes thirty days after President Donald Trump publicized an unproven link between using Tylenol - referred to as acetaminophen - during pregnancy and autism spectrum disorder in offspring.

Paxton is suing Johnson & Johnson, which formerly manufactured the medication, the sole analgesic approved for expectant mothers, and Kenvue, which presently makes it.

In a statement, he stated they "misled consumers by profiting off of suffering and pushing pills regardless of the potential hazards."

The manufacturer asserts there is no credible evidence connecting Tylenol to autism.

"These companies deceived for years, intentionally threatening countless individuals to line their pockets," the attorney general, a Republican, stated.

The manufacturer said in a statement that it was "seriously troubled by the dissemination of inaccurate information on the safety of paracetamol and the possible consequences that could have on the health of American women and children."

On its website, the company also mentioned it had "consistently assessed the pertinent research and there is lacking reliable evidence that shows a proven link between using paracetamol and autism spectrum disorder."

Groups speaking for medical professionals and medical practitioners concur.

ACOG has stated paracetamol - the primary component in Tylenol - is one of the few options for women during pregnancy to address discomfort and fever, which can create serious health risks if ignored.

"In over twenty years of investigation on the consumption of paracetamol in gestation, zero credible investigations has successfully concluded that the usage of paracetamol in any trimester of gestation causes neurological conditions in offspring," the group stated.

This legal action references current declarations from the former administration in claiming the drug is reportedly hazardous.

Last month, the former president caused concern from medical authorities when he advised expectant mothers to "fight like hell" not to consume Tylenol when sick.

Federal regulators then issued a notice that medical professionals should contemplate reducing the consumption of acetaminophen, while also stating that "a proven link" between the medication and autism spectrum disorder in children has remains unverified.

Health Secretary RFK Jr, who supervises the Food and Drug Administration, had pledged in spring to conduct "a massive testing and research effort" that would establish the cause of autism in a limited time.

But experts advised that discovering a single cause of autism spectrum disorder - considered by experts to be the outcome of a complex mix of inherited and environmental factors - would not be simple.

Autism is a type of permanent neurological difference and impairment that impacts how individuals perceive and relate to the surroundings, and is identified using doctors' observations.

In his court filing, Paxton - who supports Trump who is running for federal office - asserts the manufacturer and J&J "intentionally overlooked and sought to suppress the science" around acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder.

The lawsuit aims to force the companies "destroy any commercial messaging" that states Tylenol is reliable for pregnant women.

The court case mirrors the concerns of a collection of guardians of minors with autism spectrum disorder and ADHD who filed suit against the makers of Tylenol in recently.

The court dismissed the case, saying investigations from the family's specialists was not conclusive.
