The French government advises nationals to leave the West African nation immediately during militant fuel blockade

Fuel queues in Mali
Long queues have been snaking around gas stations

France has released an urgent recommendation for its nationals in the landlocked nation to evacuate as rapidly as achievable, as Islamist insurgents maintain their embargo of the nation.

The French foreign ministry advised citizens to depart using airline services while they are still accessible, and to avoid surface transportation.

Petroleum Shortage Intensifies

A recently imposed fuel blockade on Mali, implemented by an al-Qaeda-linked organization has upended everyday activities in the capital, the capital city, and other regions of the landlocked African nation - a one-time French territory.

France's declaration came as the maritime company - the largest global maritime firm - announcing it was halting its activities in the country, citing the restriction and deteriorating security.

Jihadist Activities

The jihadist group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin has produced the blockage by targeting petroleum vehicles on primary roads.

The country has limited sea access so each gasoline shipment are brought in by road from neighboring states such as Senegal and Ivory Coast.

International Response

Last month, the American diplomatic mission in Bamako declared that support diplomatic workers and their households would evacuate Mali during the crisis.

It said the petroleum interruptions had influenced the power availability and had the "possibility of affecting" the "comprehensive stability environment" in "unpredictable ways".

Governance Situation

The West African nation is presently governed by a military junta commanded by General Goïta, who initially took control in a military takeover in the past decade.

The military council had civilian backing when it took power, committing to handle the extended stability issues caused by a separatist rebellion in the north by Tuareg communities, which was subsequently taken over by radical groups.

Foreign Deployment

The United Nations stabilization force and French forces had been deployed in the past decade to deal with the increasing militant activity.

Each have departed since the junta took over, and the armed forces administration has hired foreign security contractors to address the insecurity.

Nonetheless, the Islamist rebellion has continued and significant areas of the northern and eastern territories of the nation remain away from official jurisdiction.
