The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... Currently.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that Pluribus would emerge as a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the popular sci-fi show wrapping up—and a second season officially in the works—the creative team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
About the Overwhelming Audience Reaction
Anyone might to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and online debates regarding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to force fed your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by online forums.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.
A Pressing Query: Will the showrunner Know the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by fan response, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… in a way.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to discard a good idea for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, one could always use the legendary finales?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
