A significant industrial complex situated in the suburbs of the capital is addressing radioactive contamination after an official team detected traces of the dangerous element Caesium-137 at 22 production plants inside the site, that includes businesses shipping chilled seafood.

Indonesian authorities launched an inquiry when the US Food and Drug Administration detected Caesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in a shipment of frozen coated shrimp sent by a local company.

Medical authorities also conducted checks on nearby workers and residents located near the manufacturing estate, finding nine individuals who tested positive for exposure to Caesium-137. These individuals were referred to a medical facility before being cleared to return home.

The affected sites will immediately receive decontamination procedures by the national atomic energy institute. Officials have also selected the site of a scrap metal plant as an containment facility for contaminated materials.

The country, which operates no nuclear energy facilities or arms program, suspects that Caesium-137 may have come into the country from overseas.

A taskforce spokesperson told reporters that recycled metal shipments were the likely source of contamination and announced the government would promptly impose limits on metal waste arrivals.
