Bluefin Fish Sells for Unprecedented Sum of $3.2m at Tokyo New Year Sale
A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the calendar year.
The winning bid for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the parent firm of a popular sushi restaurant group, which operates restaurants throughout Japan and overseas.
"The first tuna brings good luck," remarked the entrepreneur, a notable figure at the traditional first sale.
Dubbed the King of Tuna, this industry figure is renowned for submitting record bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic year-opening auctions.
Auction Shock and Historic Past
Following the auction, the winner admitted to the press that he was "surprised at the final price," adding, "I expected we would be able to purchase it a little cheaper, but the price escalated in no time."
This new purchase exceeds his own notable purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Despite previously commenting that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to shatter his personal record once again.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically associated with exceptionally high prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by another culinary group, which indicated the fish would be available at its restaurants throughout the country.
The intense activity at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a must-see tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no exception.
Immediate Consumption
The extremely valuable tuna was quickly sliced up for patrons at the bidder's sushi chains immediately after the auction ended.
"I sense like I've started the year in a positive way after tasting something so fortune-bringing as the year starts," remarked one elated customer.
