Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Network Praise

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family go about their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
